Garlic is mythically known to ward off vampires, but it can ward off many health problems as well. But to get the most out the health properties from this wonder-food, it is important to know how to prepare it. Garlic has the most effect when it is crushed, chopped or consumed raw. If you are cooking garlic with food, you should not add it to your cooking until the last ten minutes. If you add it at the beginning of your cooking, the garlic will loose its health benefits. Try adding a few cloves to your olive oil and pouring it over your salad, this is a milder way to consume garlic. Now that we know how to prepare garlic, let’s take a look at how it can improve your health.

High Cholesterol and Heart Disease

Cholesterol can be a confusing subject because there are two types: one that is good for you (HDL) and one that is bad for you (LDL). Garlic is thought to prevent LDL from oxidizing and building up in the arteries. It is this build up that can lead to heart disease.

The Mediterranean diet contains a large amount of garlic. It is no coincidence then that people from this area have a significantly lower percentage of their population that suffers from high cholesterol and heart disease. If you want to start taking garlic and you have high cholesterol, make sure that it is taken in conjunction with a balanced diet and if you have further concerns, seek your health care provider’s advice.

Antibacterial

Garlic has been proven to have the antibacterial properties equivalent to 1% of penicillin. It can be used to prevent a number of harmful bacteria such as E. Coli and Salmonella. The problem with most antibacterial medicines is that the bacteria evolves and builds up a resistance to it, but with garlic this is not the case. The common cold can also be prevented with the consumption of two to three cloves of garlic. More and more we are seeing that it is essential to include this super-food into your balanced diet.

Blood Clots

There have been clinical trails that have proven garlic supplements reduced blood pressure by up to 5%. While this figure does not sound that impressive, the reduction can shrink the risk of heart disease by up to 25%. Garlic supplements make for a great alternative to those who do not enjoy the taste of garlic. If you are worried about garlic giving you bad breath, you can also take the supplement as an alternative.

Although garlic is a proven super-food that has many benefits, you should not take too much. Too much garlic can irritate your digestive system and cause discomfort. You should also take garlic supplements with caution; they can interact and reduce the effectiveness of certain drugs such as anticoagulants. Always consult with your doctor before you start taking a regular supply of garlic.

n the past ten years or so, deaths due to cardiovascular disease and strokes have dropped drastically. While those are good things, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done for the good of heart health in this country. Far too many people continue to smoke and far too many people continue to be obese. In fact, recent studies have shown that obesity will soon be a bigger health risk factor than even smoking.

Good Cardiovascular Health Starts With Behavioral Choices

Not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, in addition to getting the necessary amount of exercise (around thirty minutes each day), are activities that are crucial for cardiovascular heath.

Good Cardiovascular Health and the Important Health Exams That You Need

Yearly exams that include blood pressure, A1C (a comprehensive test for blood sugar) and serum cholesterol levels should all be done. Kidney and liver function tests should also be completed if there are risk factors for these conditions as well.

The American Diabetic Association, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Association have all focused on individual diseases in the past. This has changed now. Now, there is no focus on just a single disease. Instead the objective is to work toward a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips for maintaining good cardiovascular health:

Smoking and Cardiovascular Health

In the case of the adults, the faster that you quit smoking the more health benefits you will get. By stopping smoking you can restore your lung function quickly, and thus reduce your chances of developing heart disease, including lung disease. Second hand smoke is dangerous as well, therefore, if not for yourself, at least stop smoking for the sake of your family.

In the case of children, avoid smoking in the first place. However, if children are already smoking, it is not impossible to quit.

Healthy Weight and Good Cardiovascular Health

Some doctors use the BMI for a guideline, others use hip to waist ratio. However, keep in mind that pear shape is more healthy than apple but overweight is not healthy regardless.

Children: the rate of childhood obesity is frightening to say the least. Children should be encouraged to eat small, healthy meals, never made to clean their plate and be banned from TV, computer or cell phones for at least one hour every day. Exercise gaming consoles might be a good exception to this rule however if they are actually actively participating.

It is easier to make these healthy changes as a group- for instance, a family game of freeze tag in the backyard is far more fun than having to do jumping jacks all alone in the basement. No one wants to feel like they are being left out and no one wants to feel like they are being punished. Imagine being the person, adult or child, who is sitting in front of a plate of steamed broccoli while everyone else is having Mama’s famous ooey-gooey lasagna and garlic bread. Little changes should be made, and should involve the whole family.

Guiding Principles for Cardiovascular Health

The American Heart Association has set up a chart with three levels: poor, intermediate and optimal health. The healthier your diet becomes and the healthier your other behaviors are the higher your score will be.

Heart Care and Diet: A Case Study

Shawn is going to the doctor for a regular check up. He is fifty years old, fairly trim and confident that nothing bad will be said at the office. What he finds out however is that his risk factors and heart score can be better. He still smokes (more than one cigarette, cigar or pipe per week) he drinks more than two drinks each evening and he does not exercise as much as he should. He also spends far too many nights up late.

Another aspect of his life that is not good in the doctor’s eyes is Shawn’s diet. He eats burgers at least a few nights a week. He does not eat very many vegetables at all and does not care for fruits of any kind. He likes fried foods and consumes way too much saturated fat. This is all reflected in his cholesterol numbers.

While Shawn is not more than a few pounds overweight, he does have serious health issues that are revealed by his health exams. In addition to the cholesterol problem, his A1C shows that he is borderline diabetic and he is also showing some impeding kidney problems according to some other tests. The doctor orders even more tests which also reveal that his liver is not at its best health either, all of which can stress the heart. Finally, his blood pressure is quite high, and while the doctor is concerned he does not want to automatically put him on medications, hoping that he will be able to get back to a healthier lifestyle.

His job is a high pressure one and he may not be able to retire like he had planned. In addition to his health problems, Shawn and his wife are not getting along very well, another stress factor that can lead to poor cardiovascular health.

It is time for Shawn to make some major changes in his life. First, his doctor sends him to a nutritionist to discuss his diet. He also makes suggestions for exercise that he can try. The exercise helps him deal with the stress at work in a healthier way and he is not as cranky with his wife. They have found that they can talk better when they are walking laps at the high school track and the other day; she took his hand during the last lap.

In addition, Shawn has started using a protein supplement that will give him highly digestible protein in a small and convenient package. Each serving gives 25 grams of protein and 100 calories. There are a number of flavors so that Shawn can have variety- he uses this twice a day as a between meal snack. He is not hungry through the day and can focus on eating better foods without succumbing to the junk food traps that he used to fall for.

At a follow up visit, Shawn’s doctor is thrilled with the improvement that he has made in his life. His blood pressure is back to normal range as is his blood sugar readings. The potential kidney problems are no longer there and his liver function test is normal as well. His heart is pumping normally and he shows no signs of blockages or other problems.

If you think being a smoking machine will make you look cool then you are only fooling yourself. Sticking cigarettes in your mouth by the dozen does not make you look “hip” or “different”. In fact, you will be just another average Joe who can’t kick the habit. Even though you may not feel the ill-effects of smoking on your health today, they are bound to sneak up on you eventually. This is why it’s important to seek help on quitting smoking now, because you never know when your body is going to turn against you.

Smoking is not an issue about right or wrong, it’s an issue about practicality. Logic and science have rationalized that smoking is injurious to health, not only to you, but to others as well. Passive smoke or second hand smoke has become a major problem for the non-smokers of today, since wherever they turn; they are covered in misty nicotine smoke that chokes them up completely.

You have a responsibility to maintain towards others, and even if you decided that your own life is not worth saving and therefore you shouldn’t stop smoking, you cannot decide the same for the others too. For their sake, you have to kick this terrible habit out through the window. So what can you do about it? How can you get to quit smoking?

First, really decide that you will stop smoking. This may seem to be a laughable matter, since you will think that it is very simple and easy. But this is not true at all. You have to stop smoking not just because your family or friends have urged you to do so, but because you have to save yourself. This is for your own good, and the faster you realize that, the stronger your promise will be to put a stop to it.

Secondly, you have to put away anything that could tempt you to go for that poisonous substance again. Make sure that you throw away all the packs, and even put away the ash-trays in the closet where you will not be able to reach easily.

Third, you can tell your friends and family about this resolution. You will be surprised to see how much help and support your will receive. But you will have to stay true to the promise that you make to yourself and the people around you will help you to keep it.

Make a list to point out the various factors for which you are willing to quit. If you have this list with you all the time, whenever you get tempted, you can glance at the list again and again to remind yourself about being stern about your promise.

Find out the times of the day when you are in the habit of smoking a lot, say after a meal, or in the evening or whenever you are alone and need to think. What you need to do during these times is to find out a better way to do things so that they will keep your mind off the subject of smoking. For example, if you are in the habit of having cigarettes in the evening, you can take a walk instead.

Drink a lot of water and eat fruits every day. This will bring you body metabolism to a balance that will de-stress you so that you do not resort to smoking.

Calculate how much you spend every month in order to buy a packet of cigarettes for yourself every week. The figure that you will arrive will make your eyes pop out. When you buy a pack, it may seem that you are spending only a sliver of your entire monthly income, but if you add up the numbers of an entire year, you will see that the added sum blows through the roof!

These steps are your help for quitting smoking. If you follow them as your rules, you will be able to resist yourself from breaking your promise to quit, and getting back to this horrible habit again. This is why it is important to stick to your convictions and never let your faith and strength waver.

But the truth is to enlighten the fact that, no matter how much you try to keep up with your health, age and lifestyle will certainly trap you into some disease or illness, even if it’s a smaller one. And there’s no doubt about one thing that with changing time not only the number, but also the severity of disease also increases.

This is where health news comes to our rescue. Earlier we could receive health news only through news papers and health brochures, but with the cyber revolution we have so many health news blogs, websites, and discussion boards to give us latest information on different health issues.

By keeping in touch with the latest health news we also come to know about public health concerns like blood donation camps, kidney or eye donation programs conducted by government health institutes.

There is no dearth of diseases in today’s world, but there are some fatal diseases which raise a lot of concern in society, like cancer, AIDS and diabetes are some of the volatile diseases that take thousands of lives every year. These are diseases that even the people not suffering from should be concerned about.

To commemorate the significance of these diseases and to spread awareness among people we dedicate certain days to them.

Like 1st December is celebrated as World Cancer Day and 4th February is the World AIDS Day and November 4th is the World Diabetes DAY.

Children health news is also very important, as they help us to get all the facts about infant and adolescence health, because with growing age every parent has concerns about their kids or teenager’s health. Change in hormones, proper growth of bones, height and weight ratio, puberty are few things every parent wants to talk about.

Even maternal health news is of equal importance because it involves both fetal and maternal health. Providing proper care to the mother and the baby, like the type of food exercise, or environment that can keep both the mother and the baby healthy is equally important.

Healthier the person better is his or her lifestyle, so why not keep in touch with the latest development in the health news and make our lives pink of health.

You’ve probably landed here because you are seeking natural home remedies for your gout, rather than the usual drug-based medications that doctors usually prescribe. You may have suffered one or other of the several nasty side effects that these can have. And you may be suffering from recurring gout.

The problem with drugs such as colchicines, corticosteroids and NSAIDs is that they can have pretty horrible side effects for many people. And the drugs such as allopurinol and probenecid that are used to help lower your uric acid have to be taken over the long-term. If you come off these there isn’t anything to stop your gout returning.

So more and more gout sufferers, fed-up with the problems of using drugs, are discovering the benefits of natural gout relief remedies. You can get natural gout relief by using known home remedies, of which there are many. However, 3 of the most effective are listed below…

1. Cherries

At the first signs of a gout attack, eat 30 to 40 cherries every 4 hours. They have natural anti-inflammatory properties and can also reduce your high uric acid levels. If you can’t get your hands on cherries use cherry juice from your local health food store. You can also get this in concentrated form.

2. Water

Drink lots of water to help your kidneys do their job of processing and flushing excess uric acid out of your body. Make sure you drink at least 3 litres of water each and every day. Don’t drink in 2 or 3 splurges, but drink regularly throughout the day. And continue even when your symptoms abate.

3. Hot and Cold Compresses

You can help to reduce inflammation and pain by applying alternate hot and cold compresses. Make sure the compress is hot, but not so hot as to burn your skin. Apply a hot compress for 3 minutes. Change right away for a cold one for 30 seconds. Repeat this process for no longer than 20 minutes. Always end in cold, never hot. Wait at least 1 hour before repeating.

These 3 natural gout relief remedies can be very effective when followed correctly. But they are only part of the answer. You see, things like your weight, family history, diet, lifestyle, medications, underlying medical issues, etc., are all triggers for gout attacks.

o The first thing is to eat a balanced diet. Eat more fruits and vegetables and get rid of the high sugar, processed foods. Along with eating better is getting the right nutrients in the system.
o So the second thing is to take vitamins and minerals to help your body work properly.
o The third tip is to quit all those nasty unhealthy habits. Smoking, drinking, drugs, chewing tobacco, whatever your vice may be quit now. You are in charge of your health and living a healthier lifestyle means getting rid of the things that may kill you.
o The fourth thing to do is exercise. Exercise makes you feel good and can motivate you to get other things done as well.
o Along with exercise, number five is making sure you see a doctor each year for an annual physical. This is more important in women, but men should be seeing a doctor every 2-3 years to make sure there are no big health concerns.
o The sixth is to surround yourself with a strong support network, or a group of people who will be there for you and participate in a healthy lifestyle as well.
o Your family and friends can help you with the seventh tip, have fun and enjoy life.
o Eighth tip is to create a good balance between work and play.
o The final two tips are to accept yourself for the unique individual you are and love what you do. If you can accept yourself, the good and the bad, it will show in all you do. Your job is something you will be doing for at least the next 20 years, so you should love it. If you don’t keep looking until you find something you do love.

Start with those healthy lifestyle choices and see how you feel in the next few weeks. You should feel more energized, motivated, and positive.

What is Asthma? Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory disorder of the respiratory air-passage. Asthma is quite a common problem affecting a large number of people in our country – age being no bar.

What happens during an asthma attack? The inside wall of the airways become narrow and inflamed. They bloat up and get filled with fluid and mucus cells. Obstruction is further caused by tightening of muscles that surround the airways. This situation is called bronchospasm. In some people with asthma, the mucus glands in the airways produce thick mucus in large quantities, further obstructing the airways.

Some common warning signs include:

* Coughing – this often becomes worse at night or early in the morning.
* Wheezing – breathing with a squeaky sound and with great difficulty.
* Shortness of breath – due to insufficient supply of air
* Fast and/or noisy breathing along with panting.

Other symptoms of asthma include:

* Sneezing
* Mood swings
* Headache
* Stuffy and blocked nose
* Chin/ throat sensitivity and itching
* Feeling of tiredness
* Trouble in sleeping

Symptoms vary from one person to another, and they also differ in severity from person to person. Sometimes symptoms can be so serious that they become life threatening.

Different tests used to diagnose asthma:

Different lung pulmonary tests that may be conducted in diagnosing asthma. Some of them include:

* Bronchial provocation test
* Routine pulmonary function test
* Exercise induced bronchoconstriction test
* Allergy intradermal skin test – although allergy tests aren’t used to diagnose asthma, they can help identify substances that may be causing or worsening asthma.
* Allergy prick skin test – to identify the sources of sneezing
* Bone density test
* Bone scan
* CT scan of sinuses
* Exercise tolerance test

What are the causes of asthma?

It is difficult to conclude as to what causes asthma. We can generally say that a person is prone to asthma if-

* there is a family history of asthma, eczema or any type of allergy.
* many aspects of modern lifestyles – such as changes diet, surrounding environment, pets staying in the same house.
* smoking during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of the child developing asthma
* children whose parents smoke are more likely to develop asthma in the long run
* environmental pollution can make asthma symptoms worse
* asthma may also develop after a viral infection or any other type of infection.
* irritants or triggers found at home or workplace may lead to a person developing asthma.

Asthma is controllable, being diagnosed with asthma does not mean that you stop living a healthy and normal life.

Diabetic is a chronic disease causing health complications. The complications are tingling and numbness appearing in feet and hands. These also include vision problems and kidney failure. Diabetes is a risk prone towards heart disease, high blood pressure and strokes. To control high glucose level, people with diabetes fail to produce sufficient insulin or no insulin. Type 1 diabetes is based on genetics and type 2 is on diet and fatness. People with type 1 diabetes face difficulties to prevent, people with type 2 try to manage by dieting and exercising.

In macro sense, a good diet plan can help diabetes control the blood sugar levels. Fruits in a diet can naturally prevent diabetes. Colored fruits possess high anti-oxidant vitamins and fibers that let the blood sugar stabilize. It appears a false notion that diabetics should not have fruits. People with diabetes can have fiber- rich fruits including water million, strawberries, papaya, plums and muskmelon. These fruits can control blood sugar levels. Fresh lime supplies vitamins and minerals to the diabetics. On the contrary, fruit juices are to be restricted, because these contain much sugar.

In diet plan, it is better to avoid juice because it raises the blood sugar level. Mango, custard apples, banana and grapes contain high sugar ingredients and these fruits should not be included in the fruits group. Therefore, dry fruits possess high level of fat, and condensed energy so that these cannot be included in fruits group. Dates, the dark- colored oval fruits are to be excluded from the list of fruits, as because dates are rich in calories and be avoided by the diabetics. However, dried dates provide calcium and iron.

Hence, in moderation, diabetics may have apples, blueberries, cherries, kiwi fruit, pears, pineapples, mangoes, black currants. When you have 75 grams of any of these fruits, you will have 10 grams of carbohydrate. Similarly, to have 10 grams of carbohydrate, you have to consume 100 grams of guava, lemon, orange, papaya, peach, strawberries, or blackberries alternatively. One fifty grams of coconut meat, raspberries, or gooseberries can provide you ten grams of carbohydrate also. People with diabetics can adjust their fruits intake as per the requirement of the body. Fructose present in the fruits. Diabetics can have fruits like other healthy persons. The fruit, citrus contains manganese that is a useful ingredient for insulin. The western Ontario university has studied citrus possesses a flavonoid that contains insulin like properties. The flavonoid is also known as naringenin.

Even though fruits are permissible to the diabetics patients, excessive consumption of fruits can let the blood sugar level increase. You have to check the portion of the fruits always. Moderate consumption of fruits can control your blood sugar level.

Bitter melon is a traditional diabetic remedy in Far East. Bitter melon contains glucose absorption that increases insulin flow. It possesses insulin effectiveness also.

Onion group can help the blood sugar control. Garlic, leek, onion, and scallion belong to onion group.

A blood pressure diet plan is not significantly different from any other good, healthy diet plan. A diet that is good for your blood pressure will also be good for your blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides. Certainly eating well usually results in feeling well. So, without further ado, let’s go eat for great health.

Any changes you make in your diet or exercise plan should be done with the good graces of your family doctor. He/she will know things about your health I wouldn’t know. For instance, one of the things a good blood pressure diet consists of is skim milk. However, you could be lactose intolerant and therefore unable to consume this product. Perhaps, you are taking a medication that something in this diet would interfere with. This is why a medical professional should approve of this diet for you.

Hi, High Fiber

A healthy blood pressure diet consists of whole grains and high fiber. One such a product is a 100% bran cereal. This should be eaten for several meals, perhaps 4 to 6, per week. It should be eaten with skim milk or perhaps sugar-free soy milk.

Pasta can also be bought in whole grain or blend varieties. These pastas are much better for you than the high starch pastas we used to eat. Eating whole grain pasta with plain or at least meat free spaghetti sauce would make for a very healthy, low-calorie meal. This is, of course, if you eat a normal serving.

Bye, Starches and Fats

White bread should be avoided. It should be replaced with 100% stone ground wheat bread. This is a high-fiber variety of bread and is much better for you. By the same token you shouldn’t butter the bread with high fat butter. However, there are soft butter substitutes that come in so-called tubs and are made from yogurt which make for a great substitute.

Eating beans, whether white, black, soybeans or lima beans are also a must on a blood pressure lowering diet. Beans are high potassium foods and potassium helps maintain healthy sodium levels. This is important when trying to gain optimum health.

Another high potassium food is the potato. The best way to prepare a potato is to bake it and eat it skin and all. Of course, filling it with cream or butter will make it a high-fat meal. A good trick is to take it with a no fat no-calorie salad dressing. This may add some sodium to the meal but it will not be significant unless the potato is drenched in the dressing.

Finally, instead of eating two or three meals a day, you should eat four or five. Eating five meals of 350 calories each will be much better for you than eating one meal of 1750 calories. Basically these are some of the things you can use to replace some of the other things you used to eat. Stay away from heavy alcohol consumption and stay away from fast foods and you will find this change will make a very healthy blood pressure diet.
